Currently, Safaricom is the sole provider of 3G services in Kenya, while Airtel and Orange Telkom have acquired 3G licenses but have yet to offer these services to their customers.
Safaricom will commence testing of 4G technology on its network before transitioning from 3G to 4G. The introduction of 4G will enable subscribers to experience enhanced internet speeds and a broader bandwidth overall. Despite the potentially high costs associated with the migration, Safaricom believes that it will yield substantial returns. To optimize efficiency, Safaricom plans to set up an additional 500 base stations alongside its existing 500 stations across the country.
Since 4G technology operates on different frequencies, Safaricom will need to acquire the necessary spectrum for its implementation. Although some may argue that 4G technology is not yet suitable for Africa, Safaricom asserts that the continent is ready for such infrastructure, which can provide connectivity and bring government services closer to the people.
Safaricom is committed to investing in the expansion and upgrade of its data infrastructure to ensure the delivery of reliable services to all Kenyans. Furthermore, the company aims to establish a fully IP-based network, enabling them to offer high-quality, cost-effective services with faster speeds. Achieving this goal will require substantial investment in infrastructure development.
Currently, Safaricom possesses significant capacity on both the TEAMS and SEACOM fiber optic cables. However, it still relies on satellite connections for redundancy, as it had entered into a five-year contract with satellite connection providers prior to the arrival of fiber optic cables. The shift to 4G technology may lead Safaricom's competitors to downplay the migration due to associated costs.
Given the latest advancements in the telecommunications sector, local ICT entrepreneurs are encouraged to invest more in innovative solutions to gain a competitive advantage. The Kenyan government is actively working on implementing favorable regulatory policies to support the growth of the sector, as stated in recent government reports.
